Today's
Los Angeles Times is carrying an article by Peter Nicholas and Robert Salladay, Times staff writers, entitled
"Gov. to Be Paid $8 Million by Fitness Magazines.".
The article discusses the relationship between incumbent California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and American Media Inc., which publishes the
National Enquirer, the
Globe, the
Startabloids, as well as
Muscle & Fitness and
Flex magazines.
According to this article, Governor Schwarzenegger will receive $8 million dollars in exchange for his work for American Media Inc., which derives substantial revenue from advertisers of nutritional supplements, legislation to regulate which was vetoed in 2004 by the Governor in his role as chief executive of the State of California.
This business relationship between a sitting governor and a company deriving substantial revenues from advertising for products the regulation of which he has thwarted, with an emphasis on the importance of this relationship in removing tabloid coverage of Mr. Schwarzenegger's alleged misconduct toward women at a time crucial to his successful campaign to replace former California Governor Gray Davis in the recall election of 2003, was the subject of an article published on the
California Politics Today web site more than nine months ago, on August 27, 2004.
Included in that article was a link to an audio interview with investigative reporter Ann Louise Bardach, in which she discusses her research into that relationship and the favorable impact of the agreement between Governor Schwarzenegger and the chairman and CEO of American Media, David J. Pecker, on the former bodybuilder's election prospects in the campaign that removed Democrat Gray Davis from office and replaced him with Republican Schwarzenegger.
This August, 2004, article was entitled
"Ann Louise Bardach describes how a secret deal helped make Arnold Schwarzenegger governor."
