ICOC announces CIRM stem cell training grant for J. David Gladstone Institutes
On September 9, 2005, The Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee (ICOC) announced the first grant awards of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM)., including $2,397,240 over a three-year period to fund seven post-doctoral and three clinical fellowships at the J. David Gladstone Institutes at the Mission Bay Campus of the University of California, San Francisco.

Bruce R. Conklin, M.D., is an Associate Investigator at the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

According to a press release issued by the Gladstone Institutes, "Members of the Gladstone Institutes' Conklin lab and Embryonic Stem Cell Lab provided living cells and helped train museum staff members for the development and launch of a current Exploratorium exhibit featuring live mouse embryonic stem cells."

California Politics Today spoke this afternoon with Dr. Conklin, who discussed the stem cell exhibit at the Exploritorium and also talked about the CIRM fellowships awarded to the Gladstone Institutes, including how they'll be used, about co-operation between and among institutions receiving these awards, and about the role of these training programs and the funding of embryonic stem cell research in California generally in re-establishing the state as a leader in bio-medical research.
