The "California Clean Money and Fair Elections Act of 2006," AB 583, authored by California Assemblymember Loni Hancock (D-14th A.D.), passed the Assembly Elections Committee at the State Capitol in Sacramento on January 10, 2006, by a razor-thin 4-to-3 vote.

The next stop in the legislative process for this bill is the Assembly Appropriations Committee which will be considering the measure on Wednesday, January 18, 2006, and Thursday, January 19, 2006. A vote on AB 583 in the Appropriations Committee is scheduled for January 19th.

California Politics Today spoke this afternoon with Judy Chu, Assemblymember representing the 49th Assembly District in Sacramento and Chair of the Appropriations Committee, about AB 583, which would bring Clean Elections/Clean Money to the State of California, if it passes through the California State Legislature and is then approved by state voters in the referendum set up by the legislation.

Assemblymember Chu noted, during that interview, that the case of super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff has made the electorate more willing than ever to consider the possibility of moving to publicly-financed elections, as authorized under AB 583.
