AB 583 passes the California Assembly Appropriations Committee
Calling it "a great day," California Assemblymember Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley)'s Legislative Aide Armando Viramontes announced and discussed today's successful 13-5 vote in the California Assembly Appropriations Committee approving AB 583, the "California Clean Money and Fair Elections Act of 2006" in an audio interview this afternoon with

the implications of AB 583's successful progress on the national debate about legislative ethics in Washington, D.C.
Referencing "the corruption that's hanging over…Capitol Hill right now and the Bush Administration," Mr. Viramontes told
California Politics Today:
"This is the absolute perfect time to talk about the only solution that's going to deal with the influence of money on public policy, the access that certain contributors may have on legislation or the kind of weight they throw around with those contributions to campaigns. This is the only solution to deal with that and to restore faith in our government to act effectively."
Comparing the Clean Money/Clean Elections approach to the "fake reform that the Republicans have put together to deal with some of these ethical issues that have arisen in Congress," Assemblymember Hancock's legislative aide Viramontes said, "I actually think we're going to see that sort of national look at public financing of campaigns."
