an interview with California State Assemblymember Loni Hancock, principal author of AB 583

Shortly afterwards, California Politics Today spoke with California Assemblymember Loni Hancock, principal author of the bill, about this important development in the progress of the largest U.S. state towards joining Maine, Arizona, and Connecticut in having a system of publicly-financed election campaigns.

what's next for AB 583

AB 583 now moves on to the California State Senate for consideration, where it is expected to be heard in the Senate Elections Committee, chaired by California State Senator Debra Bowen, sometime around the middle of February.

If the bill passes that committee, and then the California State Senate as a whole, it will go into an Assembly-Senate conference committee, where final details, especially as regards the level of funding to be made available to publicly-financed candidates, will be worked out.

Assemblymember Hancock indicated in today's interview that the mostly likely time when a successfully-passed version of AB 583 would go before California voters for an up-or-down vote on this measure would be November, 2008.

who's considering AB 583 next in the California State Legislature

Assemblymember Hancock urged Californians concerned about the need for public funding of campaigns to contact and express their support for AB 583 to their own elected State Senators and California State Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, State Senate Elections Committee Chair Senator Debra Bowen, Senator Jim Battin (Vice-Chair), Senator Kevin Murray, Senator Charles Poochigian, and Senator Gloria Romero.
