Dr. David Goodstein, Professor of Physics and Vice Provost, California Institute of Technology
a video interview with the author of "Out of Gas: The End of the Age of Oil"
Dr. David L. Goodstein is Vice Provost and Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Caltech, where he has been on the faculty for more than 35 years. In 1995, he was named the Frank J. Gilloon Distinguished Teaching and Service Professor.
Dr. Goodstein is the author of "Out of Gas: The End of the Age of Oil," published in 2004, which predicts dire consequences when the "Hubbert Peak" of global oil production occurs, after which time supplies will inexorably diminish while demand, if it continues to grow, will cause severe price increases and widespread economic and other forms of dislocation.
According to Dr. Goodstein, a Hubbert Peak for global oil production is inevitable and likely to occur within 10 to 15 years from now, possibly within this decade.
The only reasonable response to this situation, according to Dr. Goodstein, is use a variety of approaches, catalyzed by visionary leadership, to transition to a non-fossil-fueled way of conducting the world's business.
In an interview conducted today in his Caltech office, Dr. Goodstein said that he was not optimistic that the necessary transition to a non-fossil-fueled world can be made.
