On June 12, 2004, Dr. Goodstein's original audio interview was featured as part of an Oil World article entitled "'Out of Gas' as a book and as a news story (later, as reality)."

Another focus of that article was coverage of the downgrading of the level of "proved reserves" of Shell Oil and the controversy that ensued from that, along with links to complicated reports and one to an important article ("An Oil Enigma: Production Falls Even as Reserves Rise") in the New York Times, now only available to paying customers, which begins (for free) by saying:
