Google-YouTube deal signals the ascendancy of online broadband video

Google's acquisition today of YouTube, along with licensing deals entered into prior to that agreement between Google, YouTube, and media powerhouses Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, CBS, and Warner Music, mean both that the Google/YouTube combination (dubbed "GooTube" by The Tonight Show with Jay Leno's Jay Leno) has positioned itself to lead the transition from broadcast/cable-centric television distribution to broadband Internet-based television distribution and that the Brightcove video distribution platform will become the chief alternative to a GooTube video distribution monopoly, or, at least, hegemony.

the Brightcove model

Brightcove, founded by Jeremy Allaire and based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, offers content providers large and small an opportunity to create syndicatable players containing their material in a high-quality Flash format.

Later this month, according to Brightcove, the Brightcove Prime program will allow content providers to opt-in to the inclusion of video pre-roll ads along with their content, in these Brightcove syndicatable Players. These online commercial spots will be sold by Brightcove's national sales team and the revenue from them will be split with the content providers.

Brightcove's technology allows for the syndication of its players to multiple sites, where a few lines of code add front-end access to players while all hosting and streaming costs are borne by Brightcove. No system has yet been announced for revenue sharing with syndication sites.
