The recent acquisition, for $1.65 billion, of popular video sharing site YouTube by ubiquitous web presence Google has focused even more attention on the growing online video space.

In order to give users and potential users of the various platforms for sharing video online a way of judging the relative technical quality of video images being hosted on and streamed by competing web sites, Etopia News formatted, uploaded, and, here on this web page, has embedded code for the same content using three major players in the video sharing market: YouTube, Google Video, and Brightcove.

All three examples were derived from the same .avi file originally shot of Yes on 87 campaign spokesperson Dr. Shelley Luce on September 18, 2006, using a Casio Exilim EX-S500 Ultra Slim Card Camera, with a resolution of 1200 x 1800 pixels.

Using Camtasia Studio, this .avi file was converted to a .wmv file and uploaded to YouTube, and was also converted to a .flv file and uploaded to Brightcove, as required for re-play on these systems. The native .avi file was uploaded to Google Video, which accepts video files in this format.

You can compare the results below.
