As Congresswoman Pelosi prepares to take over in the U.S. House of Representatives, she pledges not to impeach Bush and Cheney
Talking to CBS reporter Leslie Stahl on tonight's episode of
60 Minutes less than three weeks before the Congressional elections that are widely-expected to sweep Democrats into control of the U.S. House of Representatives,
Congressperson Nancy Pelosi (D-California 8th C.D.) responded as follows to a question about whether impeaching President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney was on her post-election agenda:
"She has pledged that as Speaker she would give the Republicans rights they’ve denied the Democrats, like allowing them to introduce amendments to bills. But she may have trouble reining in the Democrats’ appetite for revenge. There’s already talk of multiple investigations and impeachment of the president.
"'No, impeachment is off the table,' she says.
"'And that's a pledge?' Stahl asks.
"'Well, it's a pledge in the – yes, I mean, it's a pledge. Of course it is. It is a waste of time,' she replies.
"'Wouldn't they just love it, if we came in and our record as Democrats coming forth in 12 years, is to talk about George Bush and Dick Cheney? This election is about them. This is a referendum on them,' Pelosi says. 'Making them lame ducks is good enough for me.'"
in other news, Illinois Senator Barack Obama withdraws his pledge not to run for President in 2008
Following the dictum of former U.S. Representative from Illinois (and failed Senate candidate but later U.S. President) Abraham Lincoln that
"... I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views," the current junior Senator from the Land of Lincoln, Barack Obama today withdrew his previous pledge not to run for President in 2008, telling General Electric/NBC reporter Tim Russert on today's episode of
Meet the Press:
Russert: "But it's fair to say you're thinking about running for president in 2008?"
Obama: "It's fair. Yes."
Russert: "So when you said to me in January I will not, that statement is no longer operative."
Obama: "I would say I am still at the point where I have not made a decision to pursue higher office. But it is true that I have thought about it over the last several months."
Russert: "It sounds as if the door has opened a bit."
Obama: "A bit."
According to an article entitled
"Obama now says he might run for president," by St. Louis Post-Dispatch Washington Bureau Chief Bill Lambrecht:
"WASHINGTON--U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, whose political star is rising at dizzying speed, said Sunday that he is considering running for the Democratic presidential nomination and will decide after the midterm elections whether to enter the race.
"Speaking on NBC's 'Meet the Press,' Obama, who was elected to the Senate from the Illinois Legislature two years ago, said that a public commitment he made months ago to serve out his six-year Senate term and not seek the presidency no longer was valid."
